What is a crown?

Also known as a cap, a dental crown is an artificial restoration in the shape of a natural tooth that fits over an existing tooth or abutment. They are typically made from composite resin or porcelain, and are an effective and long-lasting way to repair a tooth that has been damaged.

Am I a good candidate for a dental crown?

Our team at Dazzling Smile will do a comprehensive consultation to determine if a crown is right for you. Crowns are ideal if:

  • You need to restore a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay
  • You have a broken or cracked tooth that can’t be fixed with a filling alone
  • To cover a root canal-treated tooth or dental implant
  • You’d like to improve the appearance of a tooth by changing its shape/colour

What happens during the crown procedure?

Having a crown placed will occur over two appointments: You will first visit us to receive X-rays and an assessment of your health, and to prepare your tooth. In your second visit, the crown will be fitted.

  1. Your dentist will give you a local anaesthetic before reshaping your tooth to prepare space to place the crown.
  2. Once your tooth is shaped, we take a mould of the tooth to ensure your crown will fit perfectly.
  3. Your dentist will send all the necessary information, along with your impression and desired material, to the dental technicians where your crown will be made. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent one and your second appointment.
  4. At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and replaced with your permanent crown.
  5. Your dentist will ensure that the colour matches, that the crown fits and that your bite is comfortable. At first, it may feel slightly different or foreign to the tooth you had before, but after a few days, it will feel like a natural tooth.

How long will my crown last?

The good news is that crowns are very durable and made using the latest technology and equipment. They are made to last a long time!

The lifespan of a crown largely depends on your oral hygiene habits and how much you expose yourself to clenching/teeth grinding - on average. However, they can last for a good 15 years.
