Tooth Extractions

Our Dazzling Smile dental experts always try to preserve and save natural teeth where possible. However, sometimes saving the tooth with restorative treatments such as fillings or crowns isn’t possible, and a tooth extraction is necessary.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

You may need a tooth extraction if you experience one or more of the following:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Fractured tooth
  • Impacted tooth (from not having enough space in the mouth)
  • Crowded teeth
  • Dental injuries
  • For orthodontic procedures, such as in preparation for braces

What can I expect during a tooth extraction?

Having a tooth pulled for the first time can be daunting and nerve-wracking. However, our highly experienced team will ensure your experience is comfortable, relaxing and pain-free, and will talk you through the entire process so you know what to expect throughout and after the appointment.

After an X-ray to examine your root and bone structure, you will receive a local anaesthetic around the tooth that will be extracted. Your dentist will ensure that your surrounding gums are completely numb before extracting the tooth. During the extraction, you may still feel some movement and slight pressure, but you will feel no pain.

Recovery after tooth extraction

It takes a few days for your gums to heal following a tooth extraction. You can expect to experience some pain, bleeding and swelling directly after your extraction. This can be managed with over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, painkillers and home remedies such as an ice pack.

After the extraction, it’s vital to avoid smoking and brushing the extraction area. It is recommended to gently rinse your mouth with salt water after the procedure, eats soft foods, and avoid strenuous activity.

If you are experiencing persistent pain, bleeding longer than expected, nausea, fever and chills after several days of your appointment, you may have an infection. If you suspect an infection, call our practice for advice as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about aftercare or if something doesn’t feel right, we are always on hand to answer your questions.
