Prioritise your oral health with a scale and polish at Dazzling Smile Dental! Also known as a dental hygiene appointment or teeth cleaning, a scale and polish will remove plaque and tartar that have built up on your teeth and gum line over time, leaving your teeth and gums feeling clean and smooth.

Are regular teeth cleaning appointments necessary if I brush and floss daily?

The short answer is yes, they are! No matter how well you brush, floss and take care of your teeth, there will still be those harder-to-reach areas around the teeth and gums that are more challenging to clean.

Over time, plaque hardens and mineralises to form hard deposits that can cause gingivitis or more serious forms of gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Tartar build-up is impossible to be removed by brushing or flossing and needs to be removed with special dental tools.

What can I expect during a scale and polish cleaning?

1. First, your dentist will use a small hand-held instrument or scaler to scrape away any plaque or tartar build-up off your teeth and gum line.
2. Thereafter, she will go in with an electric polish tool that gently buffs and smooths your teeth, giving them a shiny and healthy gleam!
3. Once your teeth are well and truly cleaned, we will provide you with a fluoride treatment for added enamel protection.

What to expect after a scale and polish cleaning

After your appointment, you will notice that your teeth and gums feel noticeably smoother and cleaner (and brighter!). To maintain these results, we will advise you on how to sustain good oral hygiene at home following your appointment.

If you have been given a fluoride appointment, we recommend that you do not eat for up to 30 minutes after the treatment. Your gums and teeth may also feel slightly sensitive straight after the cleaning, but this should go away on its own within a few days.
