Routine Dental Examination

Keep your smile dazzling with a routine dental examination at our practice. Our experienced team will ensure that your teeth and gums are in tip-top shape, detect and treat issues early on, and provide preventive care when needed.

Why are routine dental examinations important?

At Dazzling Smile Dental, we emphasize the significance of routine dental examinations as they serve as preventative measures against various dental issues. These regular check-ups allow our skilled and experienced dental professionals to detect and address potential problems at an early stage, like tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer.

By scheduling routine examinations, you can ensure any underlying oral health concerns are identified and treated quickly, preventing them from progressing into more serious and costly conditions.

How often should I visit the dentist for a dental exam?

Our team recommends having a routine dental examination every 6 months. However, this depends on your hygiene habits as well as your health. If you have medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes, you should visit more often as these conditions can increase your chances of oral inflammation and other dental conditions.

You should also make an appointment for an examination as soon as possible if you have been experiencing any of the following:

  • Toothache
  • Inflamed or bleeding gums
  • Sores in the mouth that are taking longer than normal to heal
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loss of a filling or having a tooth chipped or cracked

What happens during a routine dental examination?

There are typically several parts to a routine dental examination:

  1. You will meet with one of our experienced dentists and discuss your oral health history, medical history and any concerns.
  2. We then do a thorough check-up of your teeth, gums and soft palate for any cavities and other dental issues.
  3. After a thorough examination, your dentist may suggest X-rays or recommend another appointment if any dental work needs to be done, such as extractions, crowns, bridges or further hygiene appointments.
  4. During the appointment, you may also be asked about your current hygiene habits, overall health and lifestyle.
  5. You may also be given advice on the best way to care for your teeth and gums.

What is the best way to take care of my teeth between routine visits?

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, for 2 minutes each time.
  • Avoid rinsing your mouth with water straight after brushing your teeth as this can wash away the fluoride that protects your teeth from plaque.
  • Using fluoride mouthwash as an extra measure can be beneficial. However, it is recommended to use mouthwash at a different time, such as lunchtime, to avoid washing away the concentrated fluoride left after brushing.
  • Use floss, a water flosser or an interdental brush to remove debris and food particles between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes limiting sugar, sugary drinks, and smoking is vital for optimal oral health.
